CHASE SAPPHIRE RESERVE VS AMERICAN EXPRESS PLATINUM

Hi Travel Bugsss! We are here with a special request from a follower. He has asked us to compare the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) and the American Express Platinum (AMEX Platinum). We are honored by this request because these are two of our favorite travel cards. You can apply for either of these cards through their website, we have attached the links above for your convenience. There are many different benefits to each card, so please bear with us.

POINTS

Chase Sapphire Reserved                   

3X points on travel and dining worldwide. 1X points on ALL other purchases worldwide. 1:1 points transfer to participating programs. 50K sign up bonus when you spend $4,000 in the first three months of account opening. 

American Express Platinum 

5X points when booking directly with an airlines or when booking through American Express Travel using your Platinum card. 5X points on eligible hotels booked on amextravel.com. 60K sign up bonus when you spend $5,000 in the first three months of account opening. 

ANNUAL FEE

Chase Sapphire Reserved: $450 and $75 each authorized user 

American Express Platinum: $550 and $175 for up to 3 authorized users which comes to about $58 per authorized user. 

CREDITS

Chase Sapphire Reserved offers $300 annual travel credit. You can also apply for Global Entry which will help you get through customs much faster and Chase will reimburse you the application fee.

American Platinum offers $200 annual airline credit when booking directly through a preselected airline. American Express also offer a reimbursement for the Global Entry application fee. They also offer a $200 annual Uber credit. Beware you can only receive $15 a month. Which means you can not use the whole $200 in one month.  Amex offers $100-$300 credit on cruises 5 nights or more. 

Priority Pass, this is another tie.........Just kidding but it is close! 

Chase Sapphire Reserved.

Yes! On top off offering Priority Pass for their cardholders, you can also bring as many guest as you would like free of charge.

American Express Platinum 

Yes! Unfortunately even though Priority Pass is offered to their cardholders they charge $27 per guest for lounge access.

Trip Delay insurance

If a situation comes up and your trip is delayed 6 or more hours, or has you required to stay overnight. You and your family are covered for any unreimbursed expenses such as meals, and lodging up to $500 per ticket. Amex does not offer this, but be reinsured Chase does when booking with their Sapphire Reserved card.

Trip cancellation/Trip Interruption insurance

If your trip is cancelled or cut short by sickness or weather and other covered situations, you are covered up to $10,000 per trip for pre-paid, non refundable travel expenses including passenger cars, tours and hotels with your CSR. 

Chase for the win , American Express does not offer this benefit. 

Rental Car Insurance

When booking a rental car decline rental companies collision insurance and charge rental cost to your Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Coverage is primary and provides reimbursement up to $75,000 for theft and collision damage for rental cars in the US and abroad.

Now when booking  with your American Express Platinum card medical expenses as a result of an accident by the Card Member or their passengers may be reimbursed up to a maximum of $5,000 per person. The Card Member and their passengers are also eligible for accidental death or dismemberment benefits of up to $200,000 for the Card Member and $20,000 for each eligible passenger.Loss or damage of personal property of a Card Member or their passengers can be covered for up to $1,000 per person, and up to $2,000 for all occupants. Not all car types are covered such as antique cars, make sure you read up.

Looks like American Express is taking this one. 

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

Chase will cover you and/or  your immediate family member checked or carry-on bags that end up damaged or lost by the carrier you're covered up to $3,000 per ticket.

Amex will cover up to  $2,000 for checked bag and up to a combined maximum of $3,000 for checked and carry-on baggage.

Since The Chase Sapphire Reserved offers for both you and your family, and covers up to $3,000 for either a checked or carry-on baggage opposed to $2,000 for carry-on. Chase for the win!

Travel Accident insurance

When you pay for your air, bus, train or cruise transportation with your Chase Sapphire Reserved  you are eligible to receive accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $1,000,000.

Your American Express Platinum will cover Loss of life and various injuries up to 500,000. Death or dismemberment.

Global Assist

With Chase if you or a member of your immediate family are injured or become sick during a trip far from home that results in an emergency evacuation, you can be covered for medical services and transportation up to $100,000.If you’re 100 miles or more from home on a trip, you can be reimbursed up to $2,500 for medical expenses if you or your immediate family member become sick or injured.

With American Express if you and/or immediate family member are reimbursed up to $2,500 for medical expenses if become sick or injured. You must be at least 100 miles or more from home to qualify.

Both The Chase Sapphire Reserved and American Express Platinum off a concierge service the will help you get a table at a top notch restaurant, help you book your travel needs and get you into exclusive events around the global. With both cards this service is available 24/7.

Roadside Assistance

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers roadside emergency, you can call for a tow, jumpstart, tire change, locksmith or gas. You’re covered up to $50 per incident 4 times a year.

The American Express Platinum offers services such as towing up to ten miles, changing a flat, or jumpstarting a battery—even if you're in your driveway—and we will pay for eligible services up to four times a year. There are some vehicle exclusions and other important restrictions. 

American Express for the win because they do not have a preset cap on each incident!

Chase and American Express do not just offer travel benefits but they also offer things like purchase protection, extended warranty and more! 

Purchase Protection

Chase will cover your new purchases for 120 days against damage or theft up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per year.

When American Express will cover eligible when purchases are accidentally damaged, stolen, or lost for up to 90 days from the date of purchase with your Card.

Extended Warranty

Chase extends the time period of the U.S. manufacturer's warranty by an additional year, on eligible warranties of three years or less.

American Express can extend the original manufacturer's warranty for up to one extra year for eligible purchases made on your Card.

Price Protection

When using your Chase Sapphire Reserved card, purchases you made in the U.S. is advertised for less in print or online within 90 days, you can be reimbursed the difference up to $500 per item, $2,500 per year. Where as American Express does not offer this benefit.

Return Protection

Chase will reimburse any eligible items that the store won’t take back within 90 days of purchase, up to $500 per item, $1,000 per year.

 If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days from the date of purchase and the merchant won't take it back, American Express may refund the full purchase price (excluding shipping and handling), up to $300 per item, up to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year per Card account, if you purchased it entirely with your eligible American Express Card. Please make sure you read important exclusions and restrictions on their site.

Visa infinite, each year you can received $100 off domestic round trip purchases when using the CSR. 

American Express Platinum 

Year end summary, this is one benefit that Chase could not compete with. American Express automatically sends out a year end summary to each of their cardholders giving a break down of your spending categories, Which can be extremely useful when trying to get taxes done or even when trying to budget for the upcoming year. Great tool indeed. 

American Express offers amazing Amex offers through their website.  With the Platinum card you are eligible to receive a American Express gold card free of charge. When you book either a first class or business class flight you a eligible for a companion pass. The American Express Platinum does not have a preset spending limit. Traveling to a place with no data? Do not worry American Express is here to save the day with Boingo wifi complementary for their cardholders.

Other great benefits that come along with The American Express Platinum card are things like Delta Private Jet discount, Departures Magazine Subscription, Auto Purchasing Program, and Amex pre sale tickets (Hamilton) along with American Express  Seating for restaurants and events.
